It is one of ten surviving Town lattice truss bridges in New York State. It is also tied to the transportation history of the Catskills and the local timber-based economy.","narrative":"This covered timber bridge crosses Esopus Creek just east of Winchell Falls, northeast of Olivebridge in Ulster County. It was built in 1885 by local timber framer Nelson Tompkins to carry wagons over the Beaver Kill at Turnwood, a small wood-products manufacturing hamlet. Tompkins used the Town lattice truss, a plank design joined with wooden pins, and local hemlock for the structure. By the 1930s automobile traffic made the bridge hazardous, and the county declared it unsafe in 1934. After flood damage and replacement with a steel span, it was sold at auction in 1939. The buyer had it numbered, dismantled and rebuilt about 25 miles away on his estate. The State University of New York acquired the property in 1957, and the bridge now serves the Ashokan Field Campus. It is listed as one of ten surviving Town truss covered bridges in New York and for its link to Catskill transportation and vernacular engineering.","period_of_significance":"1885-1939","architect_builder":"Nelson Tompkins (builder)","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Remains in seasonal light use as a pedestrian and light vehicle crossing on the Ashokan Field Campus of SUNY College at New Paltz.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:49.94074-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000822.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000822/72edca543f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000822/72edca543f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"JERRYE AND ROY KLOTZ MD","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ASHOKAN_COVERED_BRIDGE,_ULSTER_CO._NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JERRYE AND ROY KLOTZ MD</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ASHOKAN_COVERED_BRIDGE,_ULSTER_CO._NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322540","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashokan_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4805807"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/ashokan-turnwood-covered-bridge-00000822/"}
