It is also an intact example of a typical turn-of-the-century rural Long Island Rail Road station with a hip roof and integral canopies. It is the only one of four identical 1895 stations to remain intact.","narrative":"Built in 1895 when the Long Island Rail Road extended its line from Bridgehampton to Montauk, this one-story brick station served East Hampton's growing summer colony. It contains a waiting room and station agent's office, and its most notable feature is a wide-eaved hip roof that flows into gabled canopies carried by turned posts, brackets and bowed struts. The building measures 42 by 22 feet, with canopies bringing its length to 108 feet. Inside, the original paneling, ticket window, agent's office and benches survive. The station is listed because the railroad made the village far more accessible, and about fifty summer cottages date from the decade after its arrival, compared with roughly twenty in the decade before. It also represents a typical rural station design used on the railroad for about fifteen years. Identical stations at Amagansett, Edgemere and Farmingdale were built in 1895, but this is the only one still intact. The station continues in rail use.","period_of_significance":"1895","architect_builder":"Builder: Woodruff, Long Island City, NY","architectural_style":"Late Victorian; Other: Railroad Station","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Remains in use by the Long Island Rail Road; retains good integrity, with some changes such as ca. 1988 replacement doors and a partition dividing off a bathroom and utility room.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.557891-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000581.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000581/6b91dc70ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000581/6b91dc70ee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"DanTD (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Hampton_LIRR_Station-1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">DanTD (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:East_Hampton_LIRR_Station-1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322092","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_Hampton_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5328539"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/east-hampton-railroad-station-00000581/"}
