The Chandlery is the only surviving shipyard building from the wooden shipbuilding era, and the 1917 buildings are the only ones left from the brief steel shipbuilding period of 1917-1921. The yard operated longer and built more vessels than any other in the town.","narrative":"Bayles Shipyard occupies five acres on the south shore of Port Jefferson Harbor, at the east end of the village's commercial waterfront. Three buildings remain: the brick Bayles Chandlery of 1897, a steel-frame Machine Shop and Mould Loft of 1917, and a concrete-block Compressor House of 1917. The yard began in 1797 and was owned by the Bayles family from 1837 to 1917. It built more vessels than any other Port Jefferson yard, including 85 between 1846 and 1884. From 1917 to 1921 a federal shipping agency ran it as a steel shipbuilding operation with about 1,000 workers, producing nine steel vessels. Standard Oil bought the site in 1924 and later cleared most of the wartime structures for a tank farm. The surviving buildings are the only shipyard structures in the town from the wooden and steel eras, which is why the yard was listed for its architecture, commerce and industry. The village acquired it in 1997.","period_of_significance":"1897-1921","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate; Other: Industrial Shed","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The Chandlery has housed a police satellite station and an attorney's office since 1986. The village of Port Jefferson bought the property in 1997.
