It includes 134 contributing resources, mostly frame buildings from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century, plus farmland and two cemeteries.","why_significant":"The district retains a highly intact nineteenth-century hamlet with commercial, agricultural, residential, civic and religious buildings set among working farmland. Its areas of significance include agriculture, industry and social history. The layout reflects both the river valley and the eighteenth-century Hardenburgh Patent grid, and very little modern intrusion has occurred.","narrative":"Bovina Center is a small hamlet in the northern Catskills of Delaware County, New York, strung along Main Street (County Highway 6) on the north bank of the Little Delaware River. The historic district takes in the village core and the surrounding farms, whose fields and stone fences still frame the settlement. Most of the 134 contributing resources are vernacular frame buildings in Federal, Greek Revival, Queen Anne and Colonial Revival modes. Landmarks include the 1849 United Presbyterian Church, an 1848 schoolhouse later converted to a dwelling, and a c1915 fire house. Maple Street was laid out in the 1890s and lined with Queen Anne houses built by the contractors James Coulter and George Gladstone. Creamery Road developed as an industrial and farm quarter with a feed mill and a 1942 creamery. Two cemeteries are included. The district matters for its intact streetscapes and its record of agriculture, industry and community life, with very little modern intrusion.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"James L.
