Chapman.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is architecturally significant as a representative rural one-room school and as a unique example of the alterations made to such schools over their working life. It is also significant for its link to the development of the town of Lyndon, and it is the only remaining tax-supported structure built in Lyndon between 1829 and 1948.","narrative":"North Lyndon Schoolhouse is a one-room frame school on a hilltop along North Center Road in rural Lyndon, Cattaraugus County. Built in 1844 by local craftsman William F. Chapman, it has clapboard siding, a fieldstone foundation, a gable roof and an original square cupola holding the school bell. Inside, the open classroom keeps its tongue-and-groove walls and ceiling, chair rails, chalk trays and cloakrooms. Later changes include a rebuilt wood house, a vestibule added around 1930, and indoor toilets from the same period. The school served a changing farming community of Scotch, English, Irish and later Polish settlers until it closed in 1948 and was sold at auction the next year. It is the only remaining tax-supported building from Lyndon's 1829-1948 period, and the best preserved of three surviving local schools. Its significance rests on its representative rural design, its record of adaptations over time, and its role in the town's educational history.","period_of_significance":"1844-1948","architect_builder":"Builder: William F.
