An inscription found on a removed baseboard names Stephen Hills as house carpenter. The house has a slate lateral gable roof, Flemish-bond brick on the front, and an elaborate dentilled cornice. Its interior originally had a large north side hall with an elliptical stair and two rooms to the south, including elliptical rear parlors. Despite alterations in 1917 and later, the house retains much of its Federal character. Hills later designed the Pennsylvania Capitol in Harrisburg, and this house is his only documented work in Lancaster County. Its elliptical rear rooms are the only known examples of that form in the county. The building has been vacant since the mid-1990s.","period_of_significance":"1803-1804","architect_builder":"Stephen Hills (house carpenter/architect)","architectural_style":"Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Vacant since the adjacent Watt and Shand store closed in 1995.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.719044-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/00000519.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000519/ee31ec868a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000519/ee31ec868a-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Jack Boucher","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Montgomery_House_HABS_1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jack Boucher</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:William_Montgomery_House_HABS_1.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"01000956","name":"Lancaster City Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/pennsylvania/lancaster-city-historic-district-01000956/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71996065","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Montgomery_House_(Lancaster,_Pennsylvania)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8015754"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/lancaster-county/montgomery-william-house-00000519/"}
