It is tied to the college's history in Education and Ethnic Heritage/Black at the local level, and it is one of the few physical remnants of the early campus, built by students and alumni.","narrative":"Built between 1939 and 1941 on the campus of Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas, this one-story red brick Ranch Style house first served as the residence of college president Peter C. Washington. Students and alumni constructed it, as they did many campus buildings. After Washington's administration ended in 1949 it became a guest house, and it was later named for Florence Robinson, a former teacher who donated $10,000 toward its repair in 1976. During that work the chimneys were removed and a screened porch was enclosed, but the original dimensions, doors and windows remain. Fire, sales and demolition claimed most of the early campus, leaving this cottage and the Emma B. Smith building as the survivors of the pre-war construction effort. The house was listed for its link to the history of a historically Black college and to Black higher education in east Texas. Today it houses returning alumni and visitors.","period_of_significance":"1939-1950","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Modern Movement: Ranch Style","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"In good condition and used as an alumni center and guest house for returning alumni and visitors; no longer the president's residence.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.539476-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/39/9740/40974039/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/00000453.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000453/3b3c7c9485-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000453/3b3c7c9485-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robinsoncottage1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Robinsoncottage1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40974039","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence_Robinson_Cottage","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q28153616"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/wood-county/robinson-florence-cottage-00000453/"}
