It is also significant for its stained glass, mosaics, marble ornamentation and stone carving, including work by Judson Studios and sculptor Cartaino Scarpitta. It reflects the ambitions of a prosperous West Adams congregation.","narrative":"St. John's Episcopal Church, at 514 West Adams Boulevard in Los Angeles, is a two-story basilica-plan church in the Romanesque style, completed in 1925. Architect J. Pierpont Davis modeled it on the 11th-century church of San Pietro in Tuscania, Italy, adapting its proportions so the building is twice as high and three times as long as it is wide. The side walls are board-formed concrete, while the gabled front is carved tufa stone with hammered bronze doors, a rose window and an outdoor pulpit. Inside, the nave has Corinthian columns, English stained glass, a timber ceiling and clay floor tiles fired on site. Mosaics by Judson Studios and carving directed by sculptor Cartaino Scarpitta add to the decoration. The church replaced a smaller Gothic Revival building from the 1890s and was funded by prominent parishioners. It is valued for its architecture and craftsmanship, and it remains in religious use with much of its original character intact.","period_of_significance":"1925","architect_builder":"Davis, Walter and Pierpont /Hanson, Luis","architectural_style":"Romanesque","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use; the exterior and main sanctuary retain almost complete integrity, the interior is largely unchanged, and the Liberty Chapel has been altered.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:26.982192-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/00000425.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000425/e0abce7412-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000425/e0abce7412-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Los Angeles","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._John%27s_Episcopal_Church,_Los_Angeles.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Los Angeles</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:St._John%27s_Episcopal_Church,_Los_Angeles.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859544","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St._John%27s_Cathedral_(Los_Angeles)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7588588"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/st-johns-episcopal-church-00000425/"}
