It has a vernacular Greek Revival farmhouse built ca. 1848-50 and four contributing farm outbuildings on about 18 acres.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the farmhouse is an intact, representative example of mid-nineteenth century rural domestic architecture in the Genesee Valley and Southern Tier, with an unusual asymmetrical form and low hipped roof. The barns and outbuildings are intact examples of nineteenth century farm structures with fine heavy timber framing. Together with surviving cultivated fields, they recall the rural agrarian heritage of southern Livingston County.","narrative":"Just north of Dansville, this farmstead centers on a one-and-one-half story farmhouse built around 1848-50 for William and Catherine Driesbach Hartman. Its vernacular Greek Revival details include wide cornerboards, pilasters, a full entablature with frieze windows, and a recessed corner porch with square columns. The asymmetrical form and low hipped roof depart from typical Greek Revival design and suggest early Italianate influence. Four farm buildings survive: a large heavy timber English barn, an attached carriage shed, a small barn and a chicken house with a cupola. About 18 acres are included, with fields that remain in cultivation from a former 51-acre holding. William Hartman inherited the land from his father, a farmer and innkeeper. His daughter Emma later inherited it and rented it to tenant farmers until 1956. The property was listed for its agricultural heritage and its intact mid-nineteenth century architecture, and it remains a familiar landmark on Route 63.","period_of_significance":"1848 - ca. 1880s","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The house is still used as a single-family dwelling; the original farmland is partly still cultivated, and the house was restored by its owners after decline in the mid-twentieth century.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.506208-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000381.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000381/18b7e5fa30-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000381/18b7e5fa30-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD","credit_html":"Jerrye & Roy Klotz, MD, CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WILLIAM_HARTMAN_FARMSTEAD,_DANSVILLE,_LIVINGSTON_COUNTY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318653","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Hartman_Farmstead","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8010975"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/livingston-county/hartman-william-farmstead-00000381/"}
