It was built about 1840 as a Greek Revival cottage and enlarged and renovated in 1904.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a highly intact, representative example of Queen Anne residential architecture in Greene County. It is also significant in Social History through its association with Jewish philanthropist Harry Fischel, who bought the house in 1904 and used it as a summer residence.","narrative":"Fairlawn, the Harry Fischel House, sits on Main Street at the south end of the village of Hunter in Greene County, New York. It began around 1840 as a small Greek Revival cottage and was greatly enlarged in 1904 into a Queen Anne style residence. The frame house has clapboard and patterned shingle walls, an octagonal corner tower with a bellcast roof, and a wraparound verandah with turned posts and pierce-work trim. Inside, the 1904 stair hall, parquet floors, mantels and matchstick-paneled rooms survive, along with one original Greek Revival mantel. The property was listed for its architecture and for its link to Harry Fischel, a Russian-born Orthodox Jew who became a New York builder and philanthropist. Fischel funded schools, hospitals and a synagogue in Hunter, and his summer home there housed Jewish immigrants fleeing Nazi Germany. The nomination calls the house one of the finest residences in Hunter and an important local landmark.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840-ca. 1949","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century Greek Revival; Late Victorian/Queen Anne","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as Domestic/Hotel; the rear wing has been partly renovated for guest chambers.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.191197-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000348.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000348/35b954d526-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000348/35b954d526-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harry_Fischel_House_May_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Harry_Fischel_House_May_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317956","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Fischel_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5668831"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/fischel-harry-house-00000348/"}
