It was built in 1867-69 of local brownstone and later converted to a house.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is a rare local example of mid-nineteenth century Picturesque-inspired church architecture, mainly Flemish Revival with Gothic Revival and Romanesque elements. It was designed by regionally known architect Daniel Topping Atwood. It retains a high degree of integrity despite its 1938-39 conversion to a residence.","narrative":"Built between 1867 and 1869, this small brownstone chapel on Piermont Avenue in Grand View-on-Hudson began as a home for a Sabbath school known as the \"branch.\" Architect Daniel Topping Atwood designed it as a low, single-story building with a steeply pitched slate roof, stepped gables, asymmetrical massing, medieval-style casement windows, pointed Gothic windows and a round-arched entry. The design reflects the Picturesque movement and the Flemish and Dutch revival forms found in the Hudson Valley. The chapel was dedicated in February 1869 at a cost of more than $5,000. Sunday services ended in the 1930s, and in 1938 the building was bought and renovated as a residence, with a second floor added, new windows cut and the rose window given to a church in Sparkill. Original plaster, woodwork and exposed scissor trusses survive. It is regarded as a rare and important local landmark of the village's nineteenth-century growth.","period_of_significance":"1867-1869","architect_builder":"Atwood, Daniel T.","architectural_style":"Other/Flemish Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Converted from a chapel to a residence in 1938-39 and still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.025905-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000346.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000346/54e5c79eb8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000346/54e5c79eb8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GrandViewOnHudsonNY_FormerWaysideChapel.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:GrandViewOnHudsonNY_FormerWaysideChapel.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321532","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Former_Wayside_Chapel","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5470142"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/rockland-county/wayside-chapel-former-00000346/"}
