The congregation built it in 1880, replacing a log church of 1854.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is locally significant under Criterion A for more than a century of religious and moral leadership in the remote mountain community of Reba. It is also significant under Criterion C as an exceptionally intact example of late vernacular Greek Revival architecture. It has had no additions and keeps its original pews, windows and light fixtures.","narrative":"Set on a small rise above Sheep Creek in northwestern Bedford County, this plain white church was raised in 1880 by the farming families of the Reba community. It replaced a log building of 1854 that had a balcony for enslaved worshippers. Local men cut and hand-planed oak and chestnut timber, seasoned it for a year, and set it on a native stone foundation. The result is a one-room weatherboard building with a low-pitched metal roof, plain frieze and simple pedimented gable. Two entrances once separated men from women and children, and the original pews, which seat about 200, remain in use. Interior plaster was added in the early 1900s and electric lighting in 1948, but no additions have been made. The church is recognized for its religious role in an isolated mountain community and for being a rare, little-altered example of vernacular Greek Revival design. The nomination calls it the only Baptist church of its kind in Bedford County still in original condition.","period_of_significance":"1880-1949","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-nineteenth-century Greek Revival (vernacular, late Greek Revival)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use for worship; reopened in 1991 and heated by wood and fuel oil stoves, with electric lighting only and no running water.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.571894-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/70/6797/41679770/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/00000312.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000312/0f476836ec-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000312/0f476836ec-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:New_Prospect_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:New_Prospect_Church.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679770","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Prospect_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7011082"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/bedford/new-prospect-church-00000312/"}
