The house was built c.1855 for William D. Terrell and Mary Sadler Terrell.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding example of Greek Revival architecture in Georgia under Criterion C. It shows the style in its Doric portico with entasis and no column bases, and in its consistent interior and exterior detailing. Its triple-pile plan is described as unusual in Georgia, and few Greek Revival houses were built on rural plantations.","narrative":"Set on 7.80 acres along Harmony Road in Putnam County, Georgia, this one-story, five-bay Greek Revival house was built around 1855 for William D. Terrell and his wife Mary Sadler Terrell. It was the main house of a plantation that held about 700 acres and 20 enslaved people in 1855. The house has a pedimented portico with Greek Doric columns that swell slightly at the center and rest directly on the porch floor, as in the Greek rather than Roman order. A dentil cornice circles the building, and heavy door, window and fireplace surrounds repeat throughout the six principal rooms. Its triple-pile plan is unusual in Georgia. The property also includes a family cemetery begun in 1865, a 1930s barn and corn crib, and a saddlebag house moved from Eatonton in 1994. The architect or builder is unknown. The house was rehabilitated in the 1990s, and the work received federal certification in 1998.","period_of_significance":"c.1855 - c.1939","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling with agricultural outbuildings; rehabilitated in the 1990s and certified in 1998.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.487833-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/00000303.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000303/122d874ac0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000303/122d874ac0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Jud McCranie","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Terrell-Sadler_House,_Putnam_County,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jud McCranie</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Terrell-Sadler_House,_Putnam_County,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209306","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrell-Sadler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q108238386"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/putnam-county/terrell-sadler-house-00000303/"}
