It is also a locally distinctive example of stone architecture that reflects the region's limestone quarrying industry. It combined several public services in one building, following the earlier town hall/opera house/fire station type.","narrative":"Port Clinton City Hall is a two-story limestone building on the corner of Adams and Second streets, completed late in 1912. It brought city offices, Portage Township offices, the fire department and, from 1913, the public library under one roof. The design blends Richardsonian Romanesque and Neo-Classical Revival elements, with rock-faced limestone walls, round-arch entrance portals, a bracketed wood cornice and a central pavilion with a decorative metal balcony. A wing at the west end held the fire engines and carries a bell tower moved from the 1875 city hall. The second floor keeps its original plan and trim, while the first floor has been altered. The building reflects Port Clinton's growth around 1900 and the importance of limestone quarrying in Ottawa County, even though few stone buildings were built in the town. The library and museum moved out in 1968, city offices left in 1995, and most of the building has since been vacant.","period_of_significance":"1912-1949","architect_builder":"Shively, Samuel H.; Miller, William (builder)","architectural_style":"Neo-Classical Revival (with Richardsonian Romanesque elements)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Most of the building has been vacant since city offices moved out in 1995; the former fire station houses the city's emergency medical service.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.559891-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/00000096.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000096/24b235303f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000096/24b235303f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LeeG7144","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Port_Clinton_City_Hall_Side_View.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LeeG7144</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Port_Clinton_City_Hall_Side_View.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71990841","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q116465498"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/ottawa-county/port-clinton-city-hall-00000096/"}
