It is one of only six such schools to remain intact in the 74-mile Upper Delaware survey area. It also reflects the hamlet's development with the Erie Railroad and the valley's tradition of one- and two-room schools.","narrative":"Built around 1845 on a wooded slope in the Upper Delaware hamlet of Hankins, this one-story frame schoolhouse began as a one-room building with a symmetrical, center-entrance gabled front, six-over-six windows and simple Greek Revival-style details. John Hankins, the hamlet's namesake and a town supervisor, was responsible for its construction. Around 1900 a rear extension created a second classroom, and a small belfry with a bell was added in 1903, paid for by local individuals and organizations. Toilet rooms with running water came in the 1930s. Classes ended in 1951 when pupils moved to a consolidated school, and the Hankins Volunteer Fire Company then used the building as a meeting hall. Later alterations were modest, and the cloakroom, original wainscoting, coat hooks and pocket doors survive. It was listed as a rare, highly intact vernacular rural schoolhouse, one of only six remaining in the surrounding two-state survey area.","period_of_significance":"c. 1845-1951","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century (vernacular design with Greek Revival features)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a residence (second home); it served as a firemen's hall from 1952 after the school closed in 1951.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.382485-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/00000054.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315035","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hankins_District_No._One_Schoolhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5648541"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/hankins-district-no-one-schoolhouse-00000054/"}
