It keeps its contrasting brickwork, storefront elements and original interior finishes. It also reflects Bellaire's prosperity during the Upper Ohio Valley coal, steel and glass boom.","narrative":"Built in 1912 at 3396 Belmont Street in Bellaire, Ohio, this four-story commercial building was designed with retail space on the ground floor and offices above. It sits on a corner lot at the north end of the downtown business district, diagonally across from Union Park. The two main facades are yellow pressed brick with pilasters, orange brick banding, decorative clay tile and patterned brickwork. Inside, the original stamped metal ceilings, five-panel doors, wood floors and simple staircases survive on most floors. Hardware and furniture dealer John Zweig bought the site in 1902 and built the block ten years later, housing his house furnishings business with doctors and other offices upstairs. Mixed retail and office use continued into the 1960s. The building was listed for its architecture, as the best-preserved early 20th century commercial structure in downtown Bellaire and a reminder of the town's coal and glass boom. It has been vacant for at least a decade.","period_of_significance":"1912","architect_builder":"not known","architectural_style":"Early 20th C./Commercial","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Listed as vacant in the current function; the text says the building has been unoccupied for at least 10 years, following renovation in the late 1980s and early 1990s.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.407785-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/00000018.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000018/d1331cfc53-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/00000018/d1331cfc53-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Bwsmith84 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zweig_building.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bwsmith84 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zweig_building.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986795","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zweig_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8075647"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/belmont-county/zweig-building-00000018/"}
